Chinaberry Serving Spoon from Waihi – Jeff Fryett

Chinaberry Serving Spoon from Waihi
Chinaberry is a timber with quiet presence — pale, fine-grained, and subtly varied in tone, carrying a natural softness that suits hand-carved forms beautifully. In Jeff Fryett’s hands, it becomes a generously proportioned serving spoon, shaped slowly and intentionally using only traditional hand tools: an axe, sloyd knife, and hook knife. The result is a piece that feels both practical and quietly sculptural.
Each spoon is burnished with a smooth river pebble, drawing out a gentle sheen across the timber’s surface, before being sealed with a food-safe curing oil. This finish enhances the natural character of the wood while giving it a silky, tactile quality designed to deepen with use over time.
Ideal for serving shared dishes, salads, or slow meals around the table, this handcrafted spoon reflects the warmth of everyday rituals and the enduring beauty of simple, well-made objects.
