Kōkopu Pounamu Heart – Carved by Phil Priest

This heart is carved from Kōkopu Pounamu, named after the native Giant Kōkopu fish, and features speckled patterns in shades of brown, creamy white, and olive green. Found mainly in Wainihinihi Creek and the Arahura and Taramakau Rivers, it is prized for its unique textures and character.

Artist Statement

Phil Priest is a stone carver whose practice is shaped by his studies in Indigenous Pacific Arts at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa under Hiria Anderson. Specialising in ethically sourced New Zealand Pounamu, he has refined his craft over the years, creating unique and meticulously carved pieces that honour traditional techniques and contemporary design.
