Artist statement
Tom Somerville is a Helensville-based ceramic artist working under the name Muddy Fingers, creating vibrant, nature-inspired pottery that celebrates the organic forms of the natural world. Influenced by his time in Tonga and a love of gardening, his work draws on the textures and colours of coral reefs, plant life, and marine environments. Each piece is individually hand-built using an intuitive process and often incorporates unconventional tools, resulting in playful, sculptural forms that sit between function and art. No two pieces are the same, reflecting Tom’s appreciation for the beauty and individuality found in nature.
